SOCIAL SKILLS including I AM SPECIAL, THANKSGIVING, AMERICA, SAFARI, RODEO, SPACE
- Child gains confidence and self esteem by exploring his or her own interests as well as classmates
- In a group setting, each gains independence in learning skills that will be helpful in kindergarten such as problem-solving, turn-taking,focused attention span
- Child learns respect for peers, and other people in our country and around the world.
- Child gains emotional strength by sharing his or her own feelings, ideas and abilities.
PRE LITERACY SKILLS including:
- Communication skills of listening and initiating conversations grow through daily encouragement and reinforcement
- Fine motor and self esteem skills develop as each child learns to write his or her name and many letters of the alphabet
- Pre-reading skills develop as child relates written symbols to sounds, recognizes patterns and develops left-right progression
- Thinking skills help children learn to recognize relationships between concrete and abstract objects and events and coordinate auditory, visual and manual stimuli.
EXPLORING MATHEMATICAL CONCEPTS through GAMES,NUMBERS and PLAY
- Playing math games using manipulatives to quantify and sort helpschildren build a solid foundation of math knowledge
- Quantification,patterning, rote counting and 1-1 correspondence skills grow as children take daily attendance,work on the calendar,chart weather and play.
- Recognizing and computing using numerals 1-10; counting up to 30; creating simple patterns
EXPLORATION OF SCIENCE including SEASONAL CHANGES,ANIMALS,BUGS, the DAILY WEATHER
- Child gains vocabulary, science knowledge and observation skills as children cut a pumpkin, visit a farm and work with science toys.
- Science concepts and vocabulary grow as children hear stories and observe seasonal changes, geographic climates and insects.
- God’s wonderful springtime helps children learn about life cycles- including rebirth.
- Vocabulary development is part of the child’s exploration of daily manipulatives-magnets,gears and blocks.
CHILD HEALTH AND SAFETY through learning about CHILD SAFETY,FOOD and NUTRITION
- Children review personal safety with strangers and in everyday living.
- Science and nutrition concepts are explored as children learn to cook and eat apples and try some new foods.
CHRISTIAN CONTENT:
Each child’s spiritual awareness grows as he takes part in daily prayer and the I am Special Unit and units on:
CHRISTMAS
Children learn more about Jesus’ birthday and the joy of Christmas. They create gifts for others and invite parents to watch as they present their annual Christmas program.
EASTER
The many ways to celebrate the Easter meaning of new life and rebirth becomes more clear to children as they share family Easter traditions.
SPECIAL EVENTS:
The five year old year is one in which children can fully enjoy off site field trips and on site visitors to SUMC. Trips usually include visiting a farm in fall and a pony farm in spring. On site special events include visits from parents with special talents or careers as well as schoolwide visitors (Schoolhouse Symphony, a Policeman, dentist, storytellers, the Zoo and the Children’s Museum.)
