We believe that children should play to learn and learn through play.

We believe our role is to facilitate learning for young children, guide and encourage parents, cooperate with peers both at SUMCNursery School and other professional staff.

Our goal is to provide a positive, developmentally appropriate, ”hands on” and enriching environment in which children can work to achieve their best learning of social, motor, and language skills. We want each child to become confident and to succeed as a learner and a decision maker.

We believe in the language and pre-literacy development approach to learning.
We follow guidelines from NAEYC’s Developmentally Appropriate Practices. We believe in “hands on” learning both through play and some directed activities as preschool children approach kindergarten preparation and kindergarten children approach first grade. We believe that children, teachers and parents form a small group that work together to develop each child’s fullest abilities.

In order to help children learn through hands on events we use a variety of materials including equipment that fosters large motor and small motor development. We also use music, stories, fingerplays, rhymes, games and art activities that encourage listening skills.

Our art activities include both process oriented art and modeled art. Process art allows children to express creativity using a variety of materials and methods. Modeled art encourages children to learn to use eye-hand coordination and to follow directions.

When children play they work at learning. For a child, work is to play and play is work. Since each child learns in his or her own way and at his or her own pace, our classroom environments include a variety of materials to stimulate the children to explore and learn as they play. We help children learn self-regulation and how to follow a routine by maintaining consistently well arranged and orderly classrooms and routines with clear limits for play and other interactions.

In order to help children learn through language growth we provide activities and experiences to encourage children to question, problem-solve and engage in socially appropriate conversations with peers and teachers. Using her own speech as a model for children, each teacher encourages children along the pre literacy path to be able to listen, process information and begin to recognize the importance of the printed word.

In order to assist parents in being part of the learning team, we have two parent conferences a year. In addition, teachers send home monthly newsletters to encourage parents to ask questions of their child about each day’s experiences. We also use handwritten notes, posters, short video and photo presentations to help parents stay aware of their child’s progress. In January and May, we present a more formal written evaluation of each child.

It is our goal to help each child become the best person he or she can be. Since each child is an individual, no two children will accomplish the goals of our curriculum in exactly the same way or timing..
