Four Year Curriculum

Four’s Classes at SUMC NS
Our curriculum is based on key weekly units with related skills development. .
 
SOCIAL SKILLS of:
  • Strengthened attention and participation span;
  • Ability to engage in cooperative play and problem-solving without conflict;
  • Growth in independence ...including units on
  • FRIENDS,FAMILY,I AM SPECIAL,VALENTINES, AMERICA  
 
Child gains:
  • Confidence through Star of the Week and the Name Game
  • Fine motor and self esteem skills grow through    practice writing  and recognizing names and letters
  • Self esteem growth as children share prayer, songs and fingerplays about God understanding of celebration of love at a preschool level respect for others,other peoples and our country.    
 
EXPLORING MATHEMATICAL CONCEPTS through COUNTING,COMPARING and using SHAPES/NUMBERS
  • Art work using the shapes and numbers is fun!
  • Ability to recognize & name numerals 1-10 out of sequence
  • Quantification skills grow as children count and compare various unit related manipulatives & objects

    LANGUAGE AND LETTER SKILLS GROW through Group discussions, conversation with peers, songs, stories rhymes and opposites
    Weekly focus on one letter per week including sharing a sensory alphabet letter each week (Mid 4) and cooking a “sound” regularly with Young 4’s Learning to hold pencil correctly, write own name in lower case letters 

    SCIENCE EXPLORATION including SCIENCE CENTER, The Five Senses, graphing, experimenting, and predicting about seasons, animals and insects Child gains:
  • Vocabulary, science knowledge and observation skills as children go on a fall field trip, cook seasonal foods, and play with various science related manipulatives;,         
  • Science concepts and vocabulary growth through observation of weather changes across the seasons,
  • Exploring cause and effect and enjoying learning about dinosaurs.
  • Knowledge about life cycles-butterflies,caterpillars in God’s wonderful Spring creatures.
  • Vocabulary development as part of the child’s exploration of the science center knowledge through observation of life cycles and the ecological value of butterflies  physics understanding grows from children’s block play

CHILD HEALTH AND SAFETY through learning about HEALTHY BODIES,CHILD SAFETY and FOOD 
  • Concepts include learning how to stay healthy by eating, exercising and resting
  • Children review how to stay safe as they talk about what a stranger is and think about personal safety.
  • Nutrition concepts are explored while children cook seasonal and special days foods learn the food groups and cook alphabetically (Y-4)

CHRISTMAS
Children learn more about Jesus’ birthday and the joy of Christmas
 
EASTER
The Easter meaning of new life becomes more clear to children as they hunt for eggs, talk about  how their families celebrate Easter and work on Easter crafts                
 
SPECIAL EVENTS:
The four year old year includes both off site field trips and on site visitors to SUMC.
