Five Year Curriculum


What do you do with almost Five Year Olds?

Our curriculum includes the following key units with related skills presentation.

SOCIAL SKILLS including units on FRIENDS,FAMILY,I AM SPECIAL,THANKSGIVING, AMERICA         
 
Child gains:
  • Confidence and self esteem by sharing about his or her own interests as well as the family’s learning skills (such as problem-solving, turn-taking and focused attention span, seeking adult help when needed) in a group setting that will be helpful in kindergarten. 
  • Fine motor and self esteem skills by learning to write his or her name and letters of the alphabet
  • A growing spiritual awareness grow through daily prayer and the I am Special Unit.          
  • An understanding of how to make and be a friend at a preschool level is nurtured and developed respect for himself, others   and our country.           
           
EXPLORING MATHEMATICAL CONCEPTS through SHAPES,NUMBERS and PLAY
  • Quantification and patterning skills grow as children take daily attendance,update the calendar, chart weather and play with manipulatives                                  
  • Playing (math) games using manipulatives to quantify and sort helps children build a solid foundation of math knowledge
  • Recognition of numerals 1-10 out of sequence; counting and computing up to 10 objects; rote counting up to 30
 
PRACTICING PRE-LITERACY SKILLS INCLUDING:
  • Correctly holding pencil
  • Recognizing and writing own name in upper and lower case letters
  • Recognizing all upper case and many lower case lettersAbility to create simple patterns

EXPLORATION OF SCIENCE including SEASONAL CHANGES,ANIMALS,BUGS, the OCEAN
Child gains :
  • Vocabulary, science knowledge and observation skills while cutting a pumpkin, visiting a farm and working at the science table.
  • Science concepts and vocabulary grow as children hear stories ,observe seasonal changes, and explore ecology and insects.
  • Knowledge of God’s wonderful springtime as children learn about the life cycles of butterflies and frogs.
  • Vocabulary development as part of the child’s exploration of daily manipulatives magnets,gears and blocks).                                   
 
CHILD HEALTH AND SAFETY through learning about BODY /HEART,CHILD SAFETY,FOOD and NUTRITION
 
  • Concepts explored include vocabulary related to the function of the heart.           
  • Children review how to stay safe as they discuss strangers, and everyday safety           
  • Science and nutrition concepts are explored as children taste, cook and eat apples and try some new foods
 
CHRISTIAN HOLIDAYS
CHRISTMAS
Children learn more about Jesus’ birthday and the joy of Christmas. They create gifts for others and invite parents to watch as they present their annual Christmas program.
                       
EASTER 
The many ways to celebrate the Easter meaning of new life and rebirth become more clear to children as they share family Easter traditions,hunt for eggs and work on Easter crafts.
                                   
SPECIAL EVENTS:
The ‘five year old’ year is one in which children can fully enjoy off site field trips and on site visitors to SUMC. Trips usually include teacher’s choice of visiting a farm in fall or spring and a visit to the Fire Department. On Site special events include   visits from parents with special talents or careers, as well schoolwide visitors (Schoolhouse Symphony, Policemen, dentist, storytellers, the Zoo and the Children’s Museum.)
